Where to Swim and Splash in the River Valley This Summer (2026)
Updated for Summer 2026
When Arkansas summer arrives, most of us are looking for two things: shade and water.
Whether you’re planning a quick afternoon outing in Russellville or looking for a family-friendly day trip from Clarksville, Atkins, Dover, Dardanelle, Danville, or Morrilton, there are more places to swim and splash in the River Valley than many people realize.
Some are well known. Others are hidden gems that locals mostly learn about through word of mouth. Here’s our family’s guide to places to cool off around the River Valley this summer.
Russellville
Splash Pad
Located at Russellville City Park, this free splash pad is one of the easiest ways to cool off without spending a dime.
A few things to know before you go:
- Shade is limited, especially in the afternoon.
- Water shoes are a good idea.
- The splash pad is not fenced, so parents of toddlers will want to keep a close eye on little runners.
- There is a nearby playground, making it easy to turn this into a longer outing.
For families with young children, it’s one of the easiest spontaneous summer activities in town.
Hickey Pool
If you’re looking for a traditional outdoor pool experience, Hickey Pool is still a local summer favorite.
You’ll find:
- Swimming areas for a variety of ages
- Diving boards
- Affordable admission
- Plenty of room for kids who are ready for more than a splash pad
This is the kind of pool many Russellville families grew up visiting.
Aquatic Center
The Russellville Aquatic Center is a great indoor option and one of the few places in the area where weather isn’t a factor.
Why families like it:
- Climate-controlled environment
- Open year-round
- Good rainy-day activity
- Competition pool with open swim times
- Therapy pool for family swim
One thing families with younger children should know: Children under 16 are not allowed in the water before noon.
Family Swim Hours
- Monday–Saturday: After 12:00 PM
- Sunday: 1:00 PM–5:00 PM
During family swim you’ll find:
- Competition Pool: Lanes for exercise plus open swim, basketball goal, and diving area
- Therapy Pool: Open swim (children under 16 must stay in the shallow end)
- Inflatable Obstacle Course:
- Friday: 5:30 PM–8:00 PM
- Saturday: 12:00 PM–5:00 PM
- Sunday: 1:00 PM–5:00 PM
For many families this ends up being more of an afternoon activity rather than a morning outing.
Atkins
Atkins has two water options that many River Valley families don’t know about: a splash pad for younger children and a public city pool nearby.
Splash Pad
This smaller splash pad doesn’t always get the attention of larger facilities, but it’s a great option for younger children.
What parents will appreciate:
- Fenced play area
- Easy supervision
- Smaller footprint
- Often less crowded than larger splash pads
If you have toddlers or preschoolers, this is one to keep on your list.
City Pool
Most people know about the Atkins Splash Pad, but fewer realize there’s also a public city pool nearby.
This smaller community pool is one of those places that doesn’t get much attention online. In fact, it’s the kind of place many local families hear about through friends rather than websites.
If you’re looking for a quieter alternative, it may be worth checking out.
Because information can be difficult to find and schedules may change, I recommend calling ahead before making the drive.
Phone: (479) 641-2825
At the time of writing, local information suggested the pool may operate during the summer season Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but visitors should call ahead to confirm current hours and admission details.
Clarksville
Aquatic Center
If you’re willing to drive a little, this is one of the most feature-packed aquatic facilities in the River Valley.
Families will find:
- Water slides
- A lazy river
- Splash features
- Areas for both younger and older children
One thing to know before you go: outside food and drinks are not allowed, so plan accordingly.
For bigger kids especially, this one is often worth the drive from Russellville and surrounding communities.
Danville
Aquatic Center
Families in the Danville and Dardanelle area may want to check out the Danville Aquatic Center, which includes a waterslide, diving board, and zero-entry water features.
While it may not be worth a special trip from Russellville for most families, it’s a nice local option for those living on the western side of the River Valley and gives families in the Danville area a place to cool off without a longer drive.
State Park Day Trips
Mount Nebo Pool
One of the most unique places to cool off in the River Valley is the pool at Mount Nebo State Park.
What makes it special:
- Beautiful mountain setting
- Easy access to trails and overlooks
- Opportunity to combine swimming with a day at the park
The pool is on the smaller side, so it can reach capacity on busy weekends.
If you’re already planning a visit to Mount Nebo, packing swimsuits can turn a good day trip into a great one.
Petit Jean Pool
If you’re already planning a day at Petit Jean State Park near Morrilton, don’t overlook the public pool near the picnic area.
Many families pair:
- A morning hike
- Playground time
- A picnic lunch
- An afternoon swim
One thing kids especially enjoy is the pool’s water slide, which helps make it feel more like a destination than just a quick swim stop.
The pool near the picnic area is open to the public, while the pool near the lodge is reserved for overnight guests.
It’s a fun way to cool off after exploring one of Arkansas’s most beautiful state parks.
Natural Swimming
Lake Dardanelle State Park
Not every swimming spot in the River Valley is a pool.
Lake Dardanelle State Park offers a swimming beach area where families can cool off during the summer. It can get surprisingly busy on hot days and is a popular option for people who enjoy lake swimming.
Like many lake swimming areas, conditions can vary throughout the season.
While it isn’t my personal favorite swimming spot, it is a free option that many local families enjoy. If your kids love splashing in the lake and you don’t mind a more natural swimming experience, it may be worth checking out.

Final Thoughts
One of the things I love about living in the River Valley is that there are still places you discover through conversations with neighbors and other parents.
Some of the best summer memories don’t come from the biggest attractions. Sometimes they’re found at a small splash pad, a city pool you didn’t know existed, or a last-minute afternoon adventure when the Arkansas heat gets the best of everyone.
Did I miss one of your favorite places to swim or splash in the River Valley? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
